Remembering a fallen Omaha police officer by giving back is what organization Strength Behind the Blue is doing by hosting a coat drive.

The drive is in the name of Kerrie Orozco who was killed in May 2015.

The group is getting children together in the area to donate coats as well as teach them the significance behind supporting their local police.

Students at Portal Elementary School counted more than 100 coats they collected in just a little over a week.

Then they loaded them into a truck to be donated to less fortunate children at the Lydia House.

"Me and my brother both have coats that we don't need anymore and I knows there's people out there who need coats more than I need them," said 5th grader Madison Buge.

Strength Behind the Blue and Kids Behind the Blue are teaming up with hopes to keep every child warm this season.

"Collecting warm winter coats, boots, hats, gloves, scarves all the things you might need to brace yourself against this cold Omaha winter," said Strength Behind the Blue co-founder Annie Smith.

With an initial goal of just 50 coats from Portal Elementary School students have helped collect 160 so far.

"I just imagine myself like sitting without a house, and no shelter, with no coat," said 5th grader Cassidy Welch. "You can get frost bite or get sick," Welch continued.

Parents say it's something fallen Omaha police officer Kerrie Orozco would stand behind.

"That’s our goal in the group to do things to reach out to the community, help kids, that was Kerrie’s passion," said organizer Jill Mraz.

Strength Behind the Blue says hosting the coat drives teaches children how to give back to the community but also support local law enforcement.

"Behind those officers that they see on the streets everyday are families that also support their goal and their mission of making their community better," Smith said.

New and gently used coats are being accepted in schools across the metro for the Kerrie On Coat Drive.
